This small plate was made by Japanese potter Juro Saito, who is known for his slipware and folk craft–inspired pottery.

Born in Fujisawa, Kanagawa in 1969, Saito trained at both the Shodai and Iwai kilns before establishing his own studio in Gifu in 1999. Since 2004, he has been based in Ito, Shizuoka, where he continues to make pottery rooted in everyday life.

When we visited his studio, he told us:
“Working with slip decoration feels like a kind of release.”
True to his words, his pieces carry a lightness and freedom that make them both beautiful and deeply comforting.

“Sun” (寸) is a traditional Japanese unit of length. 1 sun = approx. 3.03 cm (about 1.2 inches).
