This placemat is made from cloth known as Bogolan (Bogolanfini), a traditional mud-dyed textile from Mali.
It is created using handwoven cotton fabric that is first treated with plant-based dyes, then colored and fixed using fermented mud and other natural dye materials. Through repeated processes of washing and removing color, patterns and depth of expression gradually emerge. The materials of the land and the work of human hands appear directly in the character of the cloth.
With use, the fabric becomes softer and develops a natural patina over time. This textile carries the heritage of mud-dyeing traditions that have been passed down in Mali for generations.
Note:
• Due to the nature of mud dyeing, color fading and color transfer are likely to occur. Even without moisture or friction, dye particles may come off and transfer to surrounding surfaces. We recommend lightly rinsing the item separately before use.
• During early use, color transfer is especially likely. Please avoid contact with light-colored fabrics such as clothing, sofas, or table linens.
• Uneven coloring, dye marks, fading, weaving irregularities, and slight distortions may be present. These are characteristics inherent to handmade production and natural materials.
