Vintage Japanese "Ige-zara" Plate – Pine, Bamboo & Plum Design – Early 20th Century

This large “Ige-zara” plate features a bold shōchikubai motif—pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms—symbols of good fortune in Japanese tradition. The central design is framed by panels of sometsuke inban (transfer-printed indigo patterns), including stylized waves, foliage, and geometric motifs.

The name “Ige-zara” refers to the jagged, thorn-like rim (ige)—a regional term from Saga Prefecture—finished here with a warm brown iron glaze (tetsu-yū) that adds a rustic charm. These practical yet decorative plates were mass-produced in areas like Imari and Mino from the late Meiji to early Shōwa era (c. 1900s–1930s) for everyday use.

Based on its motifs and production method, this piece is estimated to have been made in the early 20th century.
